Abuse, Child Abuse An injury or pattern of injuries to a child that is non-accidental and the result of acts or omissions of a child's caretaker. Types of abuse include physical abuse, sexual abuse and denial of critical care. Child abuse and neglect, or maltreatment, are defined in both federal and state law. Federal law provides a foundation for states by identifying a minimum set of acts or behaviors that define physical abuse, neglect, and sexual abuse.
Alimony Support paid by one ex-spouse to the other as ordered by a court in a divorce (dissolution) case. Income tax-wise, alimony is deductible as an expense for the payer and charged as income to the recipient. Alimony is completely different from child support.
Alternate Service Normally, when you start a case you are required to serve the defendant by process server or certified mail/restricted delivery/return receipt. But, sometimes you can't find the defendant so you can ask the court for permission to serve the defendant in a different way - by publishing notice of the case in a newspaper or posting at a shelter or some other location the defendant is known to go.
